FalcaoLucas is Tânia Falcão and Avelar Lucas and we’re two Portuguese designers/illustrators/motiongraphers/musicians/etc who also happen to be a married couple.
The inspiration came from our two children who are still discovering the world around them. Everyday, after picking them up from the nursery, they see something completely ordinary like a leaf or a pebble, and they ask us what it is and where it came from, and they look at everything in complete awe. We took that wonderful point of view and thought it would be nice to have that same wonderment by inventing a new world with new elements who defy our preconceived ideas and everything we know.
We’re located in Lisbon, the beautiful capital of Portugal. It’s almost heaven here. Nice food, nice weather, nice people, awful politicians.
It’s… bittersweet. It’s wonderful doing what you love and creating art with your life partner, but if things go sour when you’re working and living with someone 24/7, you can’t hide. You don’t get to go to your separate home to vent and relax. You need to know how to communicate with your partner to make a relationship like ours work.
The marriage came first. We met 13 years ago drinking tequila shots at a mutual friend’s birthday party and some time after we started dating. After that, we started working together at an advertising agency and many years later, after the birth of our second child, we decided to create our own agency.
Yes we do. A lot. Like twice a day. How do we resolve them? By leaving our kids once a week with the grandparents and heading out to a small pub near our house to have a drink or two and settle those disagreements. In short, with alcohol.
Yes we are… for about five minutes at a time. After that, we need to create something new.
This is going to sound like a cliche, but this is what 12 years of running our own company has taught us: never give up on your dream, but always remember that success is 90% hard work and 10% talent.
